History of World Health Day

Today, April 7th, marks World Health Day. Under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO), World Health Day aims to “focus global attention on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being.” This year in particular, WHO encourages all individuals to take a moment and reflect upon life during the COVID-19 pandemic, rising concerns about a polluted planet, and increasing diseases like cancer, asthma, and heart disease. While it is up to every individual to care for their own minds and bodies, it is important to recognize that “World health” stretches far beyond how we treat ourselves – the actions we take today in the field of medicine and our environment will affect how future generations live! UCF Student Health Services

First established when UCF (previously known as Florida Technological University) opened its doors in 1968, UCF Student Health Services has dedicated itself to providing low-cost health services to the UCF community! At the UCF Health Center, students have access to a variety of staff and services, ranging from sports medicine physicians, psychiatrists, gynecologists, dentists, primary care physicians, physician assistants, advanced registered nurse practitioners, dietitians, pharmacy staff, nursing staff, alcohol and other drug counseling, laboratory, and radiography staff!

Fortunately for our Knights, the health fee (included in tuition) helps offset student medical costs, which means students can visit a health care provider with no out-of-pocket charge for the general (primary care) office visit. Any additional charges may be covered by health care insurance or paid out-of-pocket. Located on the southeast side of main campus, near the Libra residence Hall, the UCF Health Center is home to the dental center, pharmacy, and many other services. The pharmacy allows prescriptions from outside providers and offers a wide variety of over-the-counter and toiletry products (they even have some snacks available for purchase)! Primary care and wellness services are also provided at our Rosen campus, Downtown campus, and the UCF College of Medicine.

Living away from home, many of our Knights tend to forget the importance of continuing to make those doctor visits and to schedule that recurring 6-month teeth cleaning!  Let today, World Health Day, serve as that reminder – take CARE of yourself! After all, a healthy Knight is a happy Knight!
