Yes, with approval from the DHRL leadership team, and as long as the outside job does not exceed 15 hours per week. The RA role must remain your priority, especially during required dates such as training, move-in, inspections, development days, move-out, and community programs.
Each RA position comes with a private bedroom. In some communities, however, RAs may share common areas while maintaining their own bedroom.
You can indicate community preferences on the application, and they are considered when possible. Final placements are based on staffing needs.
Weekdays (Sun–Thurs): 4:45pm–8pm in the office, assisting residents (lockouts, check-ins, rounds, incidents). From 8pm–8am, RAs are on-call in their rooms with the duty phone.
Weekends & Holidays: On-call 24 hours (4:45pm–4:45pm). RAs remain in the community, available to respond as needed.
RAs average 15-20 hours per week, though some weeks may be lighter or heavier depending on community needs. This typically includes:
- One weekday duty shift per week (4:45pm–8am).
- Several weekend/holiday duty shifts per semester.
- A weekly staff meeting (approx. 2 hours).
- Weekly or biweekly one-on-one meetings with a supervisor.
It is a significant time commitment, but many students balance RA responsibilities with academics and other commitments successfully. Our philosophy is: You are a person first, a student second, and an RA third. With time management and prioritization, the experience can be rewarding.
RAs play a vital role in building safe, inclusive, and supportive residential communities. Main responsibilities include:
Community Building: Hosting programs and events, leading community meetings, supporting Area Council, facilitating roommate agreements, and fostering relationships.
Student Support: Connecting residents to campus resources, providing peer support, and mediating conflicts.
Administrative Duties: Completing incident reports, submitting work orders, conducting occupancy and welcome-ready checks, attending meetings, and managing email communication.
Duty Coverage: Serving in weekday evening on-duty shifts (office hours 4:45pm–8pm, on-call 8pm–8am) and weekend/holiday 24-hour on-call shifts (4:45pm–4:45pm).
RAs develop valuable skills such as:
- Administrative and organizational abilities
- Self-motivation and self-efficacy
- Teamwork and leadership
- Communication and conflict resolution
- Crisis response and problem-solving
