The office of Student Legal Services offers legal counseling and court representation services to UCF students. Examples of cases they support include landlord/tenant, criminal, and traffic matters. Some of their lesser-known services include name changes, uncontested divorces, simple wills, employmentconsumer matters, walk-in notaries, and moreUCF Attorney Jamie Owen stated, “Basically, if a student has a legal problem and doesn’t know where to go, we urge them to contact us. If it’s not us, we’ll try to point them to the appropriate community resources or referral sources.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, UCF Legal Services has witnessed an increase in landlord/tenant and consumer questions. “Although Florida law doesn’t contemplate a pandemic of this nature, we are available to discuss options with students on how to best handle their situation if they are in a financial bind,” Owen said. The office recently completed a virtual “Lunch with Your Attorneys” series, where students were encouraged to ask questions and seek resources. One session covered the important topic of leases in off-campus housing, given the fact that most students were told to return home after UCF moved to remote instruction. Owen added, “UCF doesn’t control off-campus housing properties, but helping students understand what resources and options are available to them is essential during this time.”

Students are encouraged to follow Student Legal Services on Facebook and Twitter for updates on future events.

UCF Student Legal Services cannot take cases against UCF or other students, and have some additional excluded areas.
