Dr. Falon Thacker, Associate Director of Residence Life, was caught by surprise during the recent department-wide Zoom meeting when she received a great recognition. Dr. Thacker was unaware that guests from the Southeastern Association of Housing Officers (SEAHO) awards and recognition committee would be recognizing her for an award, let alone attending this departmental Zoom meeting. As the SEAHO representatives were describing the winner for the SEAHO Outstanding Mentor award, Dr. Thacker also had no idea that a small group of DHRL team members were outside her door with the award, flowers, and cameras to record the special moment. After she was named the recipient, the Zoom participants unmuted their mics to congratulate the UCF Housing leader. Dr. Thacker was then instructed to walk to her front door, where she was surprised and elated to see the small celebration of her contributions.

This award is presented to an individual who has provided outstanding mentorship to students or other housing professionals. Nominees should have served in Housing and Residential Life as a staff member for at least five years. This award is presented to someone that goes above and beyond in their efforts to provide guidance and support to students or staff in their role as a housing staff. One nominator stated, “Dr. Thacker is an exceptional colleague and a natural born leader. She demonstrates an excellent work ethic by always being reliable, prepared, and ready to rise to any challenge on any given occasion. She has an immense passion for her staff and our UCF students and takes on an active role in both their professional and personal growth. Her impeccable attention to detail, management of projects, and enthusiasm makes her a wonderful coworker and leader.”
