Ever since a young age, Angela Shar has been drawn to medicinal research. With a physician for a mother, her integration into the world of science has been a fully immersive passion that she has been pursuing for years. This passion for research led her to take an interest in legal issues as well, when she filed a patent for her undergraduate research thesis. These interests can be reflected in her double major of biomedical sciences and criminal justice. Her passion for research and innovative medicine led her to win the Astronaut Scholarship, a non-profit organization that annually awards scholarships to the best and brightest 50 college students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“I think the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation recognized my passion toward medicine and my extensive research background. This honor is a really great opportunity for building networking opportunities to connect with others,” Shar said.

Along with her many achievements, Shar has become an integral part of our residents’ lives being an RA in the Nike community. Her hard work and dedication to UCF Housing and Residence Life does not go unnoticed. When asked about being Shar’s supervisor, Nike Community Coordinator, Alyssa Shears, responded stating “Angela is a phenomenal student leader and is a joy to have on the Nike staff! She has a firm work ethic and role models study skills and time management. Angela is not one to seek out praise but deserves this recognition as she works tirelessly to, not only achieve her own goals, but help her residents achieve theirs.”

Shar is expected to attend the Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference in New Orleans this year in December to present her most recent research. “Currently I’m doing research on therapies or drugs for bone disorders and medical issues like that,” Shar said. In the future she hopes to one day earn her M.D PHD in biomaterials and tissue engineering, while also incorporating her passion for research at the same time.

Everyone here at UCF Housing and Residence Life wishes Angela good luck at the conference and cannot wait to see many more well-deserved accolades come her way!
